Hi folks!
I’m so excited to bring you a review of this book! If you’ve been reading my blog you know that Leigh Bardugo is one of my favourite authors and slowly I feel like there is nothing I don’t like that she puts out. I had a little trouble getting this book, Book Depository had a little trouble getting the book to me. But it got here, I read it and I loved it. I have to say it probably found me at the right time and thus I might be a little biased towards it (judging by the other reviews).

The story takes place 3 years after The Grisha Trilogy, so you really have to read both that series and the Six of Crows duology because there are heavy references for both. We follow Nikolai, Nina and Zoya’s view of point. We follow Nikolai and Zoya as they try to keep Ravka afloat and save it, and Nina as she is on a mission in Fjerda. With having Nina in Fjerda we really get to see more of the world of the Grishaverse. We get to know more about what customs and religion and culture of Fjerda and also a snippet of other countries as well. We also get to know more about the politics as Nikolai tries his best as the ruler to save Ravka. Though I would have appreciated a bit more insight but hopefully we will get that in the next book. I also very much enjoyed how much we got from the magic though, not nearly enough of Nina’s powers for instance. I just love the magic systerm in the Grishaverse and it was great reading another book with it. This book found me at the right time. I recently lost a person that had a big impact on my life and to read about characters that also grieved was something that helped me a lot with my own grief.
I cannot tell you how happy I was when I heard Nikolai was getting his own series. He was by far my favourite character in the Grisha trilogy and but I needed more of him. However, I would have liked if we got just a little more chapter from his view of point. Though I don’t complain because I love Nina and I came around quite enjoying reading from Zoya’s view of point. I liked that we got to know more sides of Nikolai here other than the witty and brave and resourceful Nikolai we got to know in the Grisha Trilogy. This same thing goes actually to Nina as well. We see her battling with her grief and understanding her new powers all the while she tries to carry out a mission far from her home country. It brought me great joy to read about Nikolai and Nina again. Though I have to agree with some of the reviews that said that Nina’s point of view took away from the main plot of the book thus slowing it down. But for me it wasn’t a problem. I wanted to step away from being overly critical with the book and just enjoy it. And I did. Now we had Zoya. She is from the Grisha Trilogy and in that at first I didn’t really like her but by the end of that series I came around with her. Here though I even came to like her. She was well layered and I loved how her chapters were done.
The book has a little hinted romance though it’s very vague and slow. I did not mind it at all. I think I might not even mind it if it actually blooms into romance though I definitely won’t mind if the characters just stay friends. Either way I think I’ll be fine with it and that’s quite something, coming from me, someone who really despises romance in books.
In all, I really enjoyed the book, I loved reading about Nikolai and Nina and being back in the Grishaverse and I’m very happy that I just stepped back and simply enjoyed it. The book isn’t free from flaws but I love the Girshaverse, Nikolai, Nina and Leigh Bardugo.
Sziasztok!
Nikolait követve jobban megiskerkedünk a politikával, miközben a fiatal uralkodó igyekszik megmenteni Ravkát.
Akárhogy is alakuljon, mindegyik rendben lesz számomra.
I was excited when I heard the news as well! Though, I haven’t read this release yet. I am looking forward to experiencing it soon!

I definitely need to read more Leigh Bardugo! I found Shadow and Bone fine, but I could not get into Seige and Storm! I really want to give her another try though!

Siege and Storm definitely feels more like a filler book, though I definitely enjoyed it (it might be due to Nikolai’s character). I think it’s worth a shot if for anything then getting to know the universe.

I’ve heard some people actually really dislike him, I think if you like sassy characters you will like him but if you don’t… well he might not be the character for you. I hope you’ll like it next time better! 🙂
